The Amtrak train was going from Chicago to Seattle, where three people were killed, many injured when it derailed near Joplin, Montana.<\/h2>\n

The incident occurred on Saturday, September 25, 2021.\u00a0 There were five cars on the train, Empire Builder 7\/27, derailed at about 4 p.m. local time near Joplin, according to Amtrak.<\/p>\n

The three deaths were confirmed by the Liberty County Sheriff\u2019s Department. Officials did not say how many total were injured.<\/p>\n

There were approximately 147 passengers and 13 crew members onboard the train, Amtrak said. The train was traveling from Chicago to Seattle.<\/p>\n

New York Times reported of a passenger who said, \u201cMy first thought was that we were derailing because, to be honest, I have anxiety and I had heard stories about trains derailing,\u201d said Vandervest, who is from Minneapolis. \u201cMy second thought was that\u2019s crazy. We wouldn\u2019t be derailing. Like, that doesn\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said that the car behind hers was tilted over, the one behind that was entirely tipped over, and the three cars behind that \u201chad completely fallen off the tracks and were detached from the train.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking from the Liberty County Senior Center, where passengers were being taken, she said it felt like \u201cextreme turbulence on a plane.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amtrak was working with the local authorities to transport injured passengers and safely evacuate all other passengers, an official said.<\/p>\n

Photos posted to social media showed several cars on their sides. Passengers were standing alongside the tracks, some carrying luggage.<\/p>\n

The images showed bright clear skies, and it appeared the accident occurred along a straight section of tracks.\u00a0 It was not immediately clear what caused the derailment.<\/p>\n
