Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized Modi’s government\u2019s monetization scheme which will only create monopolies.<\/h1>\n
Rahul Gandhi said that the Modi government selling public assets to private companies will create monopolies, cut down more job opportunities and wipe out the informal sector. He also warned that unemployment can lead to social tension and violence.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Rahul Gandhi also said, \u201cWe are not against privatization. Our (UPA government\u2019s) privatization had a logic and there was no privatization of strategic industry such as the railways. All this privatization is for creating monopolies. You know who owns ports and getting airports,\u201d he said, claiming the Prime Minister is \u201cselling the crown jewels of India.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some of the projects the government plans to lease are 26,700km of roads, 90 passenger trains, 400 railway stations, 28,608 circuit km transmission lines, 286,000km of Bharatnet fiber network, and 14,917 towers owned by state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Ltd.<\/p>\n

The Monetization Pipeline, as finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced on Monday, will lease infrastructure assets of central government ministries and state-run companies to create\u00a0\u20b9<\/span>6 trillion funds to build new infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Countering Rahul Gandhi\u2019s conference, Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, “The Congress is trying to become a \u201cchampion of confusion and contradiction\u201d, he said. \u201c\u2026while on one hand, the Modi government and the BJP are engaged in the construction of the country, the Congress is involved in the destruction of the country\u201d, Naqvi added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Former Congress finance minister P Chidambaram termed the exercise as \u201ca grand bargain sale\u201d and quipped, \u201cvirtually, no public sector will exist after this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chidambaram ridiculed the government\u2019s announcement on infrastructure pipeline and pointed that the government has announced the same special fund for infrastructure on three different occasions.<\/p>\n

The former finance minister said there are no criteria and goals for the monetization scheme. \u201cWe are going to raise \u20b9<\/span>1.54 lakh crore every year\u2014can this be a sole goal to sell assets? You don\u2019t embark upon the exercise without consulting stakeholders. This is all hatched in secrecy in this wonderful organization called Niti Aayog,\u201d said Chidambaram.<\/p>\n

He also stated that the National infrastructure pipeline is a project of \u20b9<\/span>100 lakh crore. \u201cHow can you match\u00a0\u20b9<\/span>100 lakh crore with\u00a0\u20b9<\/span>6 lakh crore in 5 years?<\/p>\n

Rahul Gandhi, often accused the BJP government of helping a chosen few industrialists, reiterated the same charges and said \u201cIt took 70 years to build this massive infrastructure. People\u2019s money was involved but now these are being sold to 3-4 people. As soon as these become monopolies, employment opportunities would be shrunk. Small business, medium business will not exist,\u201d he claimed.<\/p>\n

Rahul Gandhi compared the government\u2019s move with British Raj\u2019s East India Company and said, \u201cModi believes large monopolies can save this country. You will see a dramatic increase in anger and violence. Modi is an instrument for doing some particular job for these people.\u201d<\/p>\n
