Hundreds of bodies found floating in the River Ganges haunt India during the COVID nightmare, bodies were presumed to be COVID-infected while were some washed ashore to a Bihar \u00a0Chausa town – on Bihar’s border with Uttar Pradesh and the bodies suspected to have floated from Uttar Pradesh.<\/p>\n

The sight of this tragic event defies dignity to the dead and is shocking the nation. The local residents were horrified to find the pile of bodies in Bihar’s town\u00a0 The River Ganges is seated in the northern Indian state between Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, and this tragedy prompted the authorities to order a probe.<\/p>\n

There was absolute panic in the Bihar town when the bodies were washed up on the banks of the Ganga and local authorities believe the bodies floated down from Uttar Pradesh and were COVID-infected patients whose kin and loved ones may have been unable to bury or cremate them due to lack of space or even fear and panic.<\/p>\n

“The bodies are not from here as we don’t have a tradition of disposing of bodies in the river,” said an official, KK Upadhyay.<\/p>\n

He also said, “They are bloated and have been in the water for at least five to seven days. We are disposing of the bodies. We need to investigate where they are from, which town in UP – Bahraich or Varanasi or Allahabad.”<\/p>\n

“Some 40-45 bodies were seen floating,” said Chausa district official Ashok Kumar, standing at the site of the horror, Mahadeva Ghat in Chausa. He said the bodies seem to have been thrown into the river. By some accounts, there could be closer to 100 bodies.<\/p>\n

There is panic in the town and others nearby about infection from the bodies and from the river water. Dogs were seen wading near the bodies, an image that played into fears of an explosion in Covid cases.<\/p>\n

“People are terrified of getting Covid. We have to bury the bodies,” said Narendra Kumar, a villager.<\/p>\n

“A district administration official came and said they would pay \u20b9 500 for cleaning up the bodies,” he told reporters.<\/p>\n

The bodies have led to a blame-game between UP and Bihar.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, several partially burnt bodies were seen floating in the Yamuna at Hamirpur town.<\/p>\n

The Congress party alleges these bodies are proof of the untold hidden Covid deaths.<\/p>\n

India has recorded over three lakh Covid cases daily for nearly three weeks and hit record deaths, over 4,000, last week.<\/p>\n

Reports said the bodies were of people who were dumped in the river or buried on the banks after their families could not afford a proper cremation.<\/p>\n

Many Indians regard the Ganges as holy and use its bank for cremations.\u00a0 While Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to clean up the river after his election victory last year, the River Ganga is getting filthier and more polluted.\u00a0 It is frightening to think that people, throwing COVID-infected victims will now be drinking virus-infested water, causing another complicated outbreak of COVID in the region.<\/em><\/p>\n

The 2,500km (1,500-mile) river has been badly polluted by industrial waste, farm pesticides, and sewage.<\/p>\n

Bodies were first found floating near the banks of the river on Tuesday in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district.<\/p>\n

Villagers noticed the bodies when many had become stuck on the river bank with dogs and vultures circling the area.<\/p>\n

More were found on Wednesday, and authorities said so far 104 bodies had been retrieved.<\/p>\n

“It seems that as the water level has receded in the river, these bodies have surfaced,” news agency AFP quoted district magistrate Saumya Agarwal as saying.<\/p>\n

“We are trying to figure out the reason. We have sent a team of doctors on the spot to collect the samples from bodies to investigate the case.”<\/p>\n
