Today, the Supreme Court refused to hear a petition to stop construction work on the Central Vista plan at Rajpath and India Gate in Delhi.\u00a0 The Supreme Court said the case is pending before the Delhi High Court and asked the petitioner to request the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court for an early hearing.<\/p>\n
The Centre had objected to the request by petitioner Anya Malhotra.\u00a0 While\u00a0senior advocate Sidharth Luthra, appearing for the petitioner, argued that COVID-19 will peak in May and there is a 30 per cent increase in cases from April. He said construction work at a 3.5 km stretch around India Gate should be suspended in the circumstances.<\/p>\n
However, the Centre was unwilling to consider suspending the construction work and are determined to go ahead with the build in the midst of the worst pandemic.<\/p>\n
The wailing of mourning loved ones and prayers ascend on the lighting fires of funeral pyres and shadows sink into the night while thousands around are dying in rising numbers.\u00a0 India is facing its worst medical crisis since 1947 and this was not the time to lavish on Central Vista.\u00a0 The decision of the Center seemed “heartless” to many.<\/p>\n
