The scenes at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Monday once again brought India’s education crisis into sharp focus. Thousands of protesters assembled near the national capital’s most recognised site of democratic dissent<\/a>, demanding accountability for alleged examination irregularities and broader reforms in the education system. The planned “Chalo Sansad” march was stopped after Delhi Police denied permission, leading to heavy barricading and clashes in some areas as sections of the crowd attempted to move towards Parliament. Protesters alleged the use of excessive force, while the police maintained that security measures were necessary because prohibitory orders were in force.<\/p>\n

As television studios replay dramatic visuals of protesters confronting police personnel, it is worth asking whether the nation is focusing on the right issue. The real story is not the barricades at Jantar Mantar or the political slogans echoing through central Delhi. The real story is the deep erosion of public confidence in India’s education system. That loss of trust has accumulated over years through repeated controversies surrounding competitive examinations, recruitment processes and institutional accountability.<\/p>\n

The principal political demand raised during the protest has been the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Protest leaders argue that accountability must begin at the highest level. There is no doubt that political accountability is an essential feature of democracy. Ministers are expected to answer for the performance of their departments, particularly when recurring controversies affect millions of young people. Yet it is equally important to recognise that removing one individual from office does not automatically repair a broken system.<\/p>\n

Suppose the minister resigns tomorrow. Would examination papers suddenly become leak-proof? Would recruitment agencies instantly become transparent? Would the coaching industry’s overwhelming influence disappear overnight? Would state examination boards become technologically secure? Would students no longer spend years preparing for examinations clouded by uncertainty? The answer, unfortunately, is obvious. Structural problems require structural solutions.<\/p>\n

India’s education crisis<\/a> did not begin under one government, nor will it end with one resignation. For years, students across the country have faced allegations of paper leaks, delayed recruitment examinations, cancelled tests, inconsistent evaluation procedures and prolonged litigation. Every such controversy chips away at public confidence. For millions of young Indians, competitive examinations are not merely academic exercises. They represent years of sacrifice, financial hardship borne by families and, in many cases, the only realistic pathway towards stable employment and upward social mobility. When faith in that process weakens, frustration becomes inevitable.<\/p>\n

Monday’s confrontation demonstrated how difficult that balance can become. Protesters insisted that their movement remained peaceful and justified. The authorities argued that permission had not been granted for the proposed march and that security concerns required preventive action. Both narratives now occupy the public debate, and independent scrutiny of the day’s events remains essential.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, public discourse in India has become increasingly polarised. Every major issue quickly divides into competing political camps. Supporters of the government often dismiss protesters as politically motivated, while critics portray every government response as evidence of authoritarianism. Neither approach contributes to meaningful reform. Among the demonstrators were students who have spent years preparing for examinations whose credibility they now question. Among the police personnel were officers carrying out duties assigned to them under existing legal orders. Simplifying either side into heroes or villains prevents an honest discussion about the deeper institutional failures that gave rise to the protest.<\/p>\n

Equally neglected is the enormous economic burden imposed by India’s coaching industry. Across the country, families invest substantial portions of their income in preparing children for a limited number of highly competitive examinations. Entire cities have developed around coaching centres, hostels and private educational services. When examination systems repeatedly face allegations of irregularities, it is not only students who suffer. Families lose savings, years of preparation are wasted and public confidence continues to erode. Yet this enormous parallel education economy rarely receives the policy attention it deserves.<\/p>\n

If accountability is genuinely the objective, it must extend far beyond ministerial responsibility. Examination agencies, recruitment boards, digital security systems, logistics contractors, printing processes, state governments and every institution involved in conducting public examinations must be subjected to transparent and independent scrutiny. Wherever negligence or corruption is established, action should be swift, impartial and public. Accountability cannot stop at political symbolism.<\/p>\n

Parliament itself must also shoulder greater responsibility. The education system affects every household in India, yet education rarely receives sustained parliamentary attention proportional to its importance. The country regularly witnesses prolonged debates on political controversies, communal tensions and electoral strategies, while issues such as examination reforms, teacher training, public universities, research funding and institutional governance seldom command equivalent urgency. If the current movement ultimately encourages genuine reforms that restore public confidence in examinations and public education, its significance will extend far beyond one day of demonstrations. If, however, it ends with political point-scoring while the underlying problems remain unresolved, another generation of students may soon find itself protesting over the very same issues.<\/p>\n

India does not merely need a change of faces. It needs stronger institutions. Students deserve examinations that reward merit. Parents deserve confidence that years of sacrifice will not be undermined by administrative failure. Governments deserve constructive criticism when they fall short. Opposition parties deserve credit when they offer practical solutions instead of limiting themselves to demands for resignation. Above all, the nation deserves an education system in which a young person’s future depends on ability, integrity and opportunity rather than uncertainty. That, ultimately, is the real message emerging from Jantar Mantar.<\/p>\n
