The emergence of the Cockroach Janta Party stands precisely at this crossroads.

On one side lies the frustration of young people, recurring paper leak scandals, unemployment, and declining faith in educational institutions. On the other lies India’s long political history, where emotionally charged movements often transform into political enterprises, power arrangements, or projects that ultimately weaken the opposition.

For this reason, the movement deserves neither blind support nor blind hostility. What it requires is political sobriety and careful scrutiny.

Genuine youth anger or just another political experiment?

The first and most important question is whether the Cockroach Janta Party is simply a protest movement. If it exists solely to address paper leaks, examination corruption, unemployment, and the uncertain future of India’s youth, then questioning its intentions from the outset would be unfair.

Today’s Indian youth faces immense anxiety. Students are trapped between expensive coaching institutions, uncertain examinations, questionable recruitment processes, recurring paper leaks, shrinking government employment opportunities, and institutional indifference.

If a movement gives voice to this frustration, it cannot be dismissed merely because its name is unconventional, its style is rooted in social media, or its leaders do not emerge from traditional political structures.

When protest turns political, questions become inevitable

The situation changes if the movement seeks to establish itself as a political alternative. If its objective is to convert youth anger, opposition votes, and secular sentiment into political capital, then a different set of questions becomes relevant.

Could this become another mechanism for weakening opposition politics? Could it be a familiar strategy in which public anger is diverted away from the principal political contest and redirected toward an inexperienced, emotional, and organisationally weak platform? Such questions cannot simply be brushed aside.

India has seen similar experiments before

India has witnessed similar experiments in the past. Arvind Kejriwal’s movement began as a moral crusade against corruption. It attracted some of the country’s most respected intellectuals, activists, lawyers, former bureaucrats, and academics. Figures such as Yogendra Yadav, Prashant Bhushan, Professor Anand Kumar, and Professor Kamal Mitra Chenoy became associated with the project.

What followed is now part of political history. The movement became a party. The party acquired power. Power altered its priorities. Many of the individuals who had provided intellectual legitimacy to the movement eventually found themselves marginalised.

What began as an attempt to transform politics became another participant in conventional politics. Similarly, Prashant Kishor’s model of politics raises important questions. India must decide whether it needs more electoral engineering or a deeper commitment to ideological and organisational politics.

Does the country need movements that organise citizens, or projects that convert public frustration into branding exercises, survey data, and electoral products? The Cockroach Janta Party must be examined against this backdrop.

Why were JNU students, Left activists, and Sonam Wangchuk there?

It is noteworthy that JNU students participated in the protests. Left-affiliated activists were visible. Reports suggested the presence of figures associated with organisations such as SFI and AISA. Social activist Sonam Wangchuk also appeared alongside the movement.

This suggests two important realities. First, the movement did not emerge in a vacuum. It tapped into genuine political and social discontent. Second, established political and student groups are unable to ignore the energy it has generated.

Solidarity, strategy, or a search for relevance?

At the same time, the presence of Left groups should not automatically be interpreted as an endorsement of the Cockroach Janta Party.

The Left may simply be attempting to maintain relevance, register its presence, understand emerging political trends, and assess the direction of youth discontent.

The same applies to JNU students. JNU is no longer the political force it once was, yet many of its students remain engaged with public issues. Several participants reportedly stated that they had not come to support the Cockroach Janta Party itself but had joined the protest because of paper leak concerns.

That distinction matters greatly. It suggests that the issue is larger than the organisation itself. The moral centre of the movement remains education, fairness, and accountability.

A protest movement is not automatically a political alternative

This distinction is critical. Protesting against paper leaks is legitimate. Speaking for the future of young people is necessary. Challenging corruption and dysfunction in the education system is entirely justified.

However, transforming such a protest into a national political alternative is a far more complicated undertaking.

Virality is not leadership

The activists associated with the Cockroach Janta Party may be capable of organising protests. They may effectively mobilise young people, challenge the establishment, and raise questions ignored by mainstream media.

Yet organising a protest and governing a country are fundamentally different tasks. Creating slogans is not the same as creating policy. Producing viral content is not the same as building institutions. Acquiring followers is not the same as acquiring political wisdom.

This is perhaps the greatest danger. Social media popularity often creates the illusion of political competence.

Can the current leadership govern beyond social media?

Parliamentary politics requires far more than visibility. It requires ideology, organisation, historical understanding, constitutional awareness, knowledge of governance, sensitivity to minority concerns, economic literacy, foreign policy understanding, federal balance, and a nuanced grasp of India’s diverse social realities.

At present, there is little evidence that the prominent faces associated with the Cockroach Janta Party possess this level of political maturity or administrative experience.

Their right to protest should be respected. Their claim to national political leadership should be examined with far greater scrutiny.

The curious absence of mainstream media

Another notable aspect was the limited presence of mainstream media. The television channels that dominate political discourse appeared largely absent. Instead, coverage came primarily from YouTubers, independent journalists, and social media creators.

This is significant. A movement born on social media was covered largely by social media itself. It demonstrates that alternative media ecosystems are increasingly challenging the dominance of traditional outlets.

Alternative media: a democratic corrective or another narrative machine?

Yet caution remains necessary. Alternative media can challenge mainstream narratives, but alternative does not automatically mean credible. Just as television studios can serve agendas, so can smartphones and independent channels. The difference lies not in the absence of bias but in the form through which bias operates.

What the movement gets right and where it falls short

The movement deserves credit for one important achievement: it has reminded young Indians that collective action remains possible. For years, many young people have been confined either to religious polarisation, coaching centres, or digital outrage.

A movement that brings them onto the streets around issues of education and employment performs a valuable democratic function. However, there is also a risk. If this energy is diverted into an immature political project, opposition forces may weaken, votes may fragment, and public frustration may become politically ineffective.

The warning signal for opposition and secular politics

There is an important lesson here for opposition and secular parties. If they fail to engage seriously with the concerns of students and young people, other forces will occupy that space.

Politics does not tolerate a vacuum. Where organised opposition is absent, improvised alternatives emerge. Where ideological leadership disappears, memes and slogans attempt to fill the gap.

Why enthusiasm must be accompanied by skepticism

Supporters of secular politics should therefore be both encouraged and cautious. Encouraged because young people are still asking questions. Cautious because not everyone asking questions is necessarily a reliable political ally. Some are inexperienced. Some are directionless. Some may eventually become participants in projects whose larger objectives they do not fully understand.

The verdict belongs to time

At present, no definitive conclusion can be drawn. Time will determine whether this is an honest youth movement centred on education and employment or a political experiment designed to fragment opposition politics.

Time will determine whether it is a genuine resistance movement or a branding exercise. Time will determine whether it represents the authentic voice of young people or a script written elsewhere.

Support the cause, question the politics

The sensible position today is to support protests against paper leaks, take youth concerns seriously, acknowledge the moral credibility of figures such as Sonam Wangchuk, recognise the significance of participation by JNU and Left student groups, and yet avoid prematurely accepting the Cockroach Janta Party as a credible political alternative.

Let a movement remain a movement. Let a protest remain a protest. Do not rush to convert youth anger into electoral merchandise. India has already witnessed the disappointments of moral revolutions that became political parties and political experiments that became electoral products.

The country can no longer afford political innocence. If the Cockroach Janta Party stands for justice, it deserves appreciation. If it seeks to become a political alternative, it deserves rigorous scrutiny. If it ultimately functions as a mechanism for weakening opposition politics, it deserves exposure. Every voice deserves to be heard. Not every voice deserves to be followed.

A movement is born, but what exactly is it?
