Meanwhile, on Rahul\u2019s conviction Thursday, Chowdhury tweeted: \u201cRahul Gandhi chose not to apologise for fighting against corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rahul has been convicted under Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code. Prosecuting lawyer Ketan Reshamwala said: \u201cThe sentence awarded is for two years\u2026 he has pleaded that he may be released on bail till the appeal period\u2026 The court has granted him bail for 30 days and until appeal, the sentence is suspended,\u201d Reshamwala said.<\/p>\n
Shortly after the sentence, Rahul Gandhi tweeted a quote by Mahatma Gandhi. \u201cMera dharam satya hai aur ahimsa par adharit hai. Satya mera bhagwan hai, ahimsa ussey paaney ka sadhan\u201d (My \u201creligion\u201d is based on \u201ctruth and non-violence\u201d).<\/p>\n
The case was filed on a complaint lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi after the Congress leader allegedly said: \u201cHow come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?\u201d<\/p>\n
The complainant claimed the controversial remark was made at a rally at Kolar in Karnataka, ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He said the comment defamed the entire Modi community.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Rahul\u2019s lawyer said Narendra Modi \u2014 and not Purnesh Modi \u2014 should have been the complainant because most of Rahul\u2019s speeches targeted the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n
