The administration of US President Joe Biden revealed that Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman has legal immunity from prosecution, in connection with the horrific murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside his country\u2019s consulate in Istanbul in 2018.<\/p>\n
The US administration submitted a declaration of sovereign immunity to a federal court in Washington that is considering the lawsuit filed by Khashoggi\u2019s fianc\u00e9e, Hatice Cengiz aka Khadija Genghis, and the Democracy Organization for the Arab World Now, a human rights organization founded by Jamal Khashoggi.<\/p>\n
The Biden administration had said earlier that Khashoggi was killed at the direction of the Saudi crown prince.\u00a0\u00a0In a filing released late on Thursday night, the Biden administration said the crown prince\u2019s recent promotion to the role of prime minister meant that he was \u201cthe sitting head of government and, accordingly, immune\u201d from the lawsuit.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe United States government has expressed grave concerns regarding Jamal Khashoggi\u2019s horrific killing and has raised these concerns publicly and with the most senior levels of the Saudi government,\u201d the Department of Justice said in its filing, adding that the US had also imposed financial sanctions and visa restrictions related to the murder.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, the doctrine of the head of state immunity is well established in customary international law and has been consistently recognized in longstanding executive branch practice as a status-based determination that does not reflect a judgment on the underlying conduct at issue in the litigation,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n
\u201cJamal died again today,\u201d Hatice Cengiz, Khashoggi\u2019s ex-fianc\u00e9e, said on Twitter minutes after the news was published.<\/p>\n
She later added, \u201cWe thought maybe there would be a light of justice from the USA, but then again, money came first. This is a world that Jamal doesn\u2019t know and I don\u2019t!\u201d<\/p>\n
Narendra Modi had also been banned from entering the USA due to his inaction as chief minister of Gujarat in stopping the 2002 Gujarat riots, also known as the 2002 Gujarat violence and the Gujarat pogrom.<\/p>\n
