To stand together with a regime that is committing genocide against a Muslim people is to be complicit in the same genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n
Human rights are universal, said Rushan Abbas, executive director of the Campaign for Uyghurs.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy refusing to stand on the right side of history and justice, governments that voted no or abstained have made it easier for China to carry out the ongoing genocide against Uyghurs, and hindered the progress toward real justice and accountability for the victims,\u201d he told RFA.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Greg Barton, an Indonesia scholar at Australia\u2019s Deakin University, said Jakarta\u2019s move was \u201cdisappointing, but not surprising.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt would have been good to see Indonesia being more bold, but at least, unlike a number of other countries, Indonesia did not simply rehash the propaganda of the Chinese government and deny that there is a problem of human rights abuses on a massive scale occurring in Xinjiang,\u201d Barton told BenarNews.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe real reason for Indonesia to be against the motion is that China\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative has a major investment in Indonesia, and they won\u2019t forget about the investments and focus on the human rights issues in Xinjiang,\u201d Si, a researcher at the Institute for National Defense and Security Research in Taiwan, told RFA.<\/p>\n
\u201cXinjiang\u2019s human rights situations are not important to them. The human rights records in their own countries are not so good either.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rene Pattiradjawane, a scholar at the Center for China Studies in Jakarta, said Indonesia\u2019s vote was in line with its non-alignment foreign policy.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndonesia should not be lured into a campaign to vilify China for the interests of other countries,\u201d he told BenarNews.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndonesia in any context will not want to join anti-China bullying.\u201d<\/p>\n
Indonesia perhaps seeing which side their bread is buttered, like most countries, did not vote against China’s atrocities against the Uyghurs.\u00a0 \u00a0It was also disappointing that\u00a0 India abstained from a vote that would allow a discussion on the abuse of human rights in the Uyghur region in China at the United Nations Human Rights Commission.<\/p>\n
In the end, it is rising to a silent battle between the East and the West.\u00a0 When USA and Western counties speak against human rights atrocities, Asians feel they are dominating them, so instead of fighting genocide, they let it happen. It is a battle of egos, at the very end.<\/p>\n
