The defence ministry of China on Monday defended its refusal to have military talks with the USA in protest against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2018s<\/a> visit to Taipei last week, warning that Washington must bear \u201cserious consequences. \u201cPelosi\u2019s visit last week infuriated China, which regards the self-ruled island as its own and responded with test launches of ballistic missiles over Taipei for the first time, as well as ditching some lines of dialogue with Washington.<\/p>\n \u201cThe current tense situation in the Taiwan Strait is entirely provoked and created by the U.S. side on its own initiative, and the U.S. side must bear full responsibility and serious consequences for this,\u201d defence ministry spokesman Wu Qian said in an online post. \u201cThe bottom line cannot be broken, and communication requires sincerity,\u201d Wu said.<\/p>\n China also warns the USA not to \u2018stir up bigger crisis\u2019 over Taiwan as it increases military drills for the third day<\/p>\n Four days of unprecedented drills were scheduled to end on Sunday. Chinese authorities have not officially confirmed they have ended, amid fears among some security analysts that the situation in the Taiwan Strait, particularly near the unofficial median line buffer, remains tense. About 10 warships each from China and Taiwan manoeuvred at close quarters around the line on Sunday, according to a person familiar with the situation who is involved with security planning.<\/p>\n The island\u2019s defence ministry said Chinese military ships, aircraft, and drones had simulated attacks on the island and its navy. It said it had sent aircraft and ships to react \u201cappropriately\u201d.<\/p>\n China called off formal talks involving theatre-level commands, defence policy coordination and military maritime consultations on Friday as Pelosi left the region. Pentagon, State Department and White House officials condemned the move, describing it as an irresponsible overreaction.<\/p>\n China\u2019s cutting off some of its few communication links with the U.S. military raises the risk of an accidental escalation over Taiwan at a critical moment, according to security analysts and diplomats.<\/p>\n One U.S. official noted that Chinese officials had not replied to calls from senior Pentagon officials amid the tensions last week, but that they did not see this as a formal severing of ties with senior figures, such as U.S. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin.<\/p>\n Asked directly about those reports, defence ministry spokesman Wu said, \u201cChina\u2019s relevant countermeasures are a necessary warning to the provocations of the United States and Taiwan, and a legitimate defence of national sovereignty and security\u201d.<\/p>\n The moves of China are eerily somewhat similar to what Russia did before its attack on Ukraine.\u00a0 The USA condemns China\u2019s \u2018irresponsible\u2019 and \u2018provocative\u2019 military drills in Taiwan Strait.<\/p>\n China had continued its threatening military drills<\/a> around Taiwan, raising the agenda of war games ventured in retaliation to the visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island of Taiwan.<\/p>\n
