TRS emerges as the single largest party in the GHMC election, BJP makes big inroads in the state capital. Congress faces worst defeat

Hyderabad: Results of the GHMC polls have been declared on Friday evening with the TRS emerging as the single largest party in the hustings. Though, the voters in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election have not given a clear majority to the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi or BJP.

The BJP came second by winning 48 divisions out of the total 150, after the counting of votes, polled in the GHMC election. The TRS won 55 divisions and leading in 1 division, while AIMIM won 44 divisions followed by the Congress party which settled with 2 divisions.

Congress faces worst defeat

The Congress managed to win two seats. In the election, the two seats which Congress won are – Uppal (Rajitha) and AS Rao Nagar (Sirisha Reddy). The party also tasted defeat in the recently held Dubbak by-election.

Owing to the failure of the Congress party in the GHMC election, TPCC President Uttam Kumar Reddy resigned from his post. Mr. Reddy asked the Congress High Command to elect a new president for TPCC. He has been serving as the party’s Telangana chief since 2014.

AIMIM manages to hold its fort

Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) came third winning 44 of the 51 seats it contested. In the last GHMC polls, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s TRS had won 99 seats, the AIMIM had won 44, the BJP four, the Congress two, and TDP one seat.

Owaisi’s AIMIM managed to hold its fort in old Hyderabad by winning 43 seats. The party had to face comments ranging from Biryani, Pakistan, Rohingyas, Jinnah to surgical strikes. Having such issues dominated the campaign, it was hard to believe if it was just a civic poll in one of the fastest-growing metropolises of India.

TRS to analyze unexpected results

TRS Working President and Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao told Reporters tonight that ‘the result was not on expected lines what the party expected.’

He said ‘we expected that the TRS will win in 20-25 more divisions and added the party lost narrowly in 10-12 divisions with a margin between 200-300 votes’.

Asking the TRS cadre not to get ‘demoralize’ over the loss in the election, Mr. Rao said we will analyze what went wrong for not winning more divisions in the election. The Minister said the people of Telangana has given the chance for the TRS to be as a single largest party.

Failing to get the magic figure to claim mayor post in the GHMC elections despite being the single major party, TRS working president K T Rama Rao (KTR) on Friday night said that we will certainly discuss everything in the party and address all the issues on “why the desired outcome was not given by the people”.

Addressing the reporters after winning 55 seats out of 150 in GHMC elections, Mr. KTR, who is also the Municipal Minister, thanked the public for choosing the TRS party as the single largest to represent them in the council.

However, the results are not the same as what we expected and certainly short of 20-25 seats, Mr. KTR, who was the star campaigner during the elections, said.

BJP makes big gains in GHMC election

Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party made inroads into the state capital with a spectacular performance in the high-stakes Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Election (GMC) by winning 43 divisions and leading in another seven divisions after counting of votes polled on December 1 was taken up this morning.

The BJP was well ahead by winning more than 80 divisions than TRS and AIMIM after the counting of postal ballots was ended but its count was dipped after the votes in ballot boxes were counted.

The victory in the GHMC election for BJP mark a giant leap in their plans for the 2023 Assembly election, as there will a straight fight between the TRS and BJP with the Congress, which won 2 divisions, proved that it is not in the reckoning.

According to reports, the TRS will settle at 55 divisions as its victory was dimmed by the BJP’s massive surge. The TRS had won 99 divisions and AIMIM in 44 divisions in the 2016 GHMC election.

Buoyed by the victory in the bypoll for the Dubbaka Assembly seat recently, the BJP conducted a high-voltage campaign by roping in top leaders from the Centre like Mr. Amit Shah, Mr. J P Nadda, Mr Yogi Adityanath, Mr Prakash Javadekar and Ms Smriti Irani hoping for a change before the assembly election three years away from now.
